We take into account a system of (N + 1) particles, where N of them have mass m and

the remaining one has mass M >> m, which interact through the α-homogeneous potential of

type U(r) = 1/r^α.

Here r is the distance between two particles and α ∈ [1, 2). The massive particle stays

fixed at the center of mass, playing the role of a planet. Imposing symmetry and topological

constraints, periodic orbits for the small particles can be found as minimizers of the Lagrangian

action. Moreover, as the mass M increases, we prove that the Lagrangian action Γ-converges

to the action of a Kepler problem.

We discuss some examples with different symmetry groups, namely Z2N , Z2 × Z2 and the

rotation groups of the Platonic polyhedra. Here we are able to find sequences of collision-free

minimizers, depending on the value M of the central mass, and we shall see how Γ-convergence

theory helps in understanding the asymptotic behaviour for M → +∞.
